How to Increase your Spiritual Vocabulary?

By now, I’m sure you have realized just how important communication is. In any relationship, communication isn’t only vital, but communication will either make or break it. Any person who is married will be able to bear witness to this.

Effective and concise communication in our natural relationships will either create great success in your life or great havoc. The same law applies in the Spirit.

Vocabulary is crucial in order to communicate effectively, and it’s developed over time. Just as a newborn baby is limited in their speaking, so are we as believers when we first receive utterance of our heavenly language.

The power of praying in tongues should not be underestimated. In fact, the Bible says that when we speak in tongues, we speak mysteries. There is tremendous power in this, but we have to increase our vocabulary in our heavenly language.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)

I am going to list some life-changing facts when it comes to speaking in tongues, and if you apply them, I can guarantee that you will not recognize yourself 6 months from now.

  1. Speaking in other tongues will cause a river of God’s power to continually flow through the life of a believer:

In Genesis 11, we read of the times when people were building the tower of Babel. They were of one language, one speech and in one accord, and then God said, “Now nothing will be restrained from them that they imagine to do.”\

God had to come down to disrupt and confuse their language so that they couldn’t understand each other, because He knew the power which was accessible to them when they were with one tongue.

Under the new covenant, “one language” was restored for those that believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is undoubtedly a language that empowers the church – the Ecclesia; the called-out ones. Now, nothing that the Ecclesia imagines to do can be stopped. Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)

“A powerless Christian is a Christian that cannot pray, speak or sing in other tongues.”

  1. To increase the vocabulary of your tongues, you need to increase your understanding:

To substantiate the above statement, I am going to break open a scripture that is widely misunderstood in the body of Christ.

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
1 Corinthians 14:18 (NKJV)

The word “thank” is from the Greek word “eucharisteō” - meaning to honour. Paul’s thank you came out of a place of reverence, deep respect, appreciation, admiration and adoration.

Then the word “speak” is from the Greek word “laleo” meaning to utter, to preach, to utter with a sound.

The word “more” is from the Greek word “mallon”meaning to a greater level or greater degree.

In essence, the verse can be translated in the following way:

“I honour and value my God so much that I utter with tongues to a greater level and to a higher degree than you all.”

Paul was not speaking about the quantity of tongues which many people teach. He was speaking about the quality of tongues.

If you want to increase the vocabulary of your tongues then you need to increase your spiritual knowledge of the Word.

  1. There are different levels that we pass through while praying in tongues:

There is a level that you reach when praying in tongues where your entire being is involved in the conversation. You are so in sync with the Holy Spirit that it is no longer just something mechanical that you do.

To reach the highest level of tongues you will need to break through into groaning

38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
John 11:38-41

But when did the Father hear the Lord Jesus pray? The above chapter doesn’t record a prayer that Jesus made.

Jesus was praying when He was groaning!

Groaning is a certain level of prayer that you reach when you have come to the end of the vocabulary given to you according to your understanding, and you push through into groaning.

We see in the aforementioned scriptures above that groaning will even cause the dead to be raised.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Romans 8:26 (NKJV)

This scripture speaks about a level where your language becomes groaning. This is a level where the very will of God is being expressed.

So how do we get to this place?

We have to increase our vocabulary in tongues:

Ephesians 1:17
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

It’s interesting to note that the Bible uses the Word “may” He give unto you, not “will”.

“in the knowledge of Him” – in the epignōsis” – meaning in the full and exact knowledge of God.

  • The precise and correct knowledge.
  • The knowledge of things ethical and divine

So Paul is saying  that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the (full and exact knowledge) of Him,

Therefore, if you want to increase your vocabulary in tongues, you will need the spirit of wisdom in the knowledge of Him.

This means that you will have to get deep into the Word and consume it daily. You will need to enrich your spirit by depositing the Word inside of you. This is the highway to increasing your spiritual vocabulary.

  • This tells us that tongues is the result of processed Word.
  • Meaning that the Word is the raw material for tongues.
  • Your spirit is the factory where the Word is turned into tongues.
  • Meaning more Word, more vocabulary in tongues.
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…
1 Corinthians 14:4 (NKJV)

As you continue to pray in the Spirit, you are pushing back the enemy and gaining ground in the Spirit. Remember, you first accomplish these things in the Spirit before it manifests in the natural. Now when the enemy strikes you with a blow in order to distract you, constantly fighting to remove you from your God-given call and purpose, you need to fortify yourself and strike back by praying in other tongues.

The devil forgot that you have been equipped with powerful revelation that increased your knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. You delved deeper into the Word, and all of a sudden – out of nowhere – the enemy heard you uttering another word in tongues that he had never heard yourself speak before.

This will cause the enemy great confusion – wondering how you could know this!

“For every battle, you require a new tongue!”

18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:18

The Greek word for “understanding” in the previous scripture is: dianoia”, which means:

  1. The mind as a faculty of understanding, feeling, desiring.
  2. The way of thinking and feeling.
  3. Thoughts, that are either good or bad.

The scripture above is saying - the eyes of your spiritual feelings are being enlightened.

The Greek word for “enlightened” is “phōtizō”. Meaning to be saturated with light.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)

Speaking in the Holy Ghost is what brings that enlightenment, bringing understanding to the eyes and knowledge on what direction to take.

When the eyes of your understanding are enlightened, you will begin to feel the right things – the things of God.

13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
John 16:13 (NKJV)

You might be looking for a way out of that situation, desperately waiting for an answer. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. This guiding comes when we are filled with the truth of God and start to pray in the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 14:2 says that when you pray in tongues, you are praying mysteries. As you pray, suddenly light comes upon the situation, and the answer manifests in your dianoia. This is when suddenly you know, by the Inner Witness, that is the Holy Spirit, on what direction you should take.

If you begin to apply the revelation from this teaching, you will experience great victory, even as you tap into the ability to pray the perfect will of God. As you do, you shall keep advancing and pressing towards the upward call in Christ Jesus!
